Spasticity Clinic

Diaplasis Rehabilitation & Recovery Center also runs a Special Spasticity Clinic

What is the Spasticity Clinic?

The clinic is staffed with a qualified neurosurgeon, neurologist and orthopedic surgeon. The patient is trained to manage spasticity, in addressing his/her lack or inability as consequence of the spacticity, aimed at improving hes/her quality of life.

What is Spasticity?

  • Spasticity is a muscle tone disorder, where there is excessive muscle tightness, to an extent that even children with near normal muscle strength, are unable to smoothly perform voluntary movements.
  • Diseases such as cerebral palsy, perinatal hypoxia, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury (trauma, tumors) can cause spasticity.
  • In addition to the obstruction of smooth muscle movement, there are also muscle aches and impaired physical posture because of rigidity, factors that negatively affect the quality of life in children and critically hinder their activities, play, recreation and learning.

Spasticity is greatly reduced with concurrent intensive physiotherapy (e.g. maintaining range of motion exercises, hydrotherapy, kinesiotherapy, etc. that are supervised orthpaedics that specialize in spasticity).
