Neurogenic Bladder Clinic

The Neurogenic Bladder Clinic is a test that helps in the functional evaluation of the lower urinary tract.

What is a Neurogenic Bladder Clinic

  • This test examines the function of the lower urinary tract (bladder and sphincter). Their function is evaluated both in the filling phase (as the bladder fills with urine), and the voiding phase (for the duration of the urination).
  • The examination is necessary to evaluate the neurogenic bladder, to investigate urinary incontinence, to document outflow obstruction, or an underactive detrusor.

What is a Neurogenic Bladder

  • The general term “neurogenic bladder” includes any type of bladder dysfunction that occurs in people with problems of the nervous system.
  • Several muscles and nerves must work together for your bladder to hold urine until you are ready to empty. Nerve messages go back and forth between the brain and the muscles that control bladder emptying.
  • If these nerves are damaged by a disease or an injury, you may not be able to tighten or relax the muscles at the proper time.

Disorders of the central nervous system usually cause neurogenic bladder. These may include:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Birth defects of the spinal cord
  • Brain and spinal cord tumors
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Encephalitis
  • Learning disabilities such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Stroke

Symptoms depend on the cause. They often include symptoms of urinary incontinence.

Medications can help manage your symptoms. A specialist doctor at our center can recommend:

  • Medicines that relax the bladder (Tolterodine, or propantheline)
  • Medicines that make certain nerves more active (bethanechol)
  • Botulinum toxin (Botox)
  • GABA supplements
  • Anti-epileptic drugs
  • Skills or techniques that may help you manage bladder problems.
